Chernobyl want to turn into a tourist paradise. This is real?
This is almost a direct speech of the newly elected President of Ukraine, who officially declared his desire to turn the gloomy monument of a technological catastrophe into the most important landmark of the country. And useful – imagine how much money tourists will bring, whose interest is thoroughly fueled by the recent release of the show of the same name? True, there is a downside.
The growth of tourism, the number of visitors to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and the ghost town of Pripyat in the coming years is inevitable. And it’s not just in the series and idle curiosity. In 2019, the construction of the second, now permanent protective dome over the first, temporary “sarcophagus” was officially completed. The main source of the radiation threat in the Zone is securely covered, moreover, you can now build convenient schedules for visiting the station by tourists and scientific experts, so as not to interfere with each other. The number of expeditions, studies, excursions will only grow.
The new dome will last at least 100 years, but it still does not go to any comparison with the 20 thousand years that will be required for the complete cleaning of the 30-kilometer area. So, letting tourists go for a walk in the thickets without guides is impossible, but where can we get so many trained personnel? For example, such a simple aspect as the personal dosimeter check of everyone who leaves the zone. The procedure takes a few minutes, not counting the baggage survey, which means that only one bus will be inspected from an hour or more. We will have to build dozens of access corridors on the border, otherwise there will be no talk of impressive traffic.
Something expensive and difficult to get. And let’s run tourists light, without things at all, giving everyone disposable plastic overalls? A good idea, especially since spoiled travelers will surely want to have a picnic, but eating food and water in the area is deadly. Even if you brought them with you in a sealed bag. How to put a mask on your face at the entrance, and do not take off under any circumstances, even for selfies. And do not complain, enjoy the excursion.
From the Chernobyl zone can not make anything, not a single object, it is an understandable fact. But you can touch it? Alas, it is impossible, and not only because of the fear of radiation. For over 30 years without maintenance and repair, many structures and objects in Pripyat have turned into rusty, fragile and therefore dangerous trash. To cut oneself, to fall through a rotten floor, to be buried under collapsed ceilings is a very real prospect. So, like in the Stalker universe, you will have to build trails and not leave them on pain of the death of the whole group. Here is an exotic entertainment!
If the wind blows, the air is full of radioactive dust. And if it rains, around the puddles and streams of fonding water. Helicopter rescuers to the broken leg tourist does not fly, and do not expect. Fight yourselves from the aggressive gopher or squirrel, while in some bushes a forest boar awaits, and in others – wolves or feral dogs. And spending the night in the zone is akin to a catastrophe. No, while professionals are engaged in this, problems are minimal, but how to ensure the safety of thousands and millions of inexperienced tourists in such conditions?
However, the idea of turning Chernobyl into a new tourist Mecca is a huge plus. All this can be organized as a huge experiment in developing new technologies and methods of organizing conditions for the life of large masses of people in difficult situations. Alas, in the future there will be new technogenic apocalypses and natural disasters, and therefore such knowledge and skills will be very useful to humanity.
